Forget the stages of grief.  Such models are largely irrelevant for coping with bereavement because they do not capture the profound and infinite dimension of loss. 

 

My approach is to understand grief as a painful mystery, and it is your task to make a home in this strange new land.

 

Bereavement is lonely, frightening, disorientating, anxiety-provoking, but it also surprising.  It is seldom what we expect it to be.
